my Magna-trac

I got a 1964 Magna American Corp Magna-Trac........

I haven't really pulled with it, but saw this site pop up and thought I'd join!!!!!!

Givve it dual aggs full of WW fluid, and some front weight, and your good to go, then after a while a re-Powering wont hurt it, and maby some paint...

never seen one of those before. it looks like a strong built tractor and looks like it would make a good puller and be strong good luck with it

Yep, I would add duals, and some weight!

Id add the weight and then a bigger set of tires...Duals are usually not a good option, they are for floatation not traction.....1 set of tires will pull better than 2 sets on the rear....Make the weight moveable and she will pull, id look into repowering with a kohler K series(if thats not whats in it cant tell), or rebuild whats in it..the old engines make GOBS more power and torque than the newer ones, and TORQUE is what gets you down the track!!!!

Listen to him ^ he is a experienced puller, I for one have never pulled but am creating one here soon.

Well, first off the engine is a Briggs 23d 9hp torque monster.... second, it would have ags on it if I could afford them, and third, I am torn between leaving the 46 years of patina alone, or repainting the original colors........

And yeah...if I ever get ags, they will be tubed and filled...........I use this guy in the winter for plowing.........kinda fun pushing around a 4 ft tall pile of snow with a 9 hp tractor.........LOL

But I do have chains for it for now......

And I don't know if it will ever see pulling duty......I already busted 2nd gear once, and took like 3 months to find a gear for it..........I may not be so lucky next time......

is that belt driven or shaft driven?

my guess it would be shaft driven by the looks of the way the tractor was built but it may not be

Its belt driven......belt comes off the engine, goes down to the framerail has a clutch for the trans and a constant shaft for the deck pto

I will try to dig out pics of the belt arrangement today......

wow im surprised alot of older tractors like that have shaft driven is it a horizontal or vertical shaft

Horizontal......the shaft runs across the frame....... still haven't had time to dig thru photobucket to find pics of the clutch and pto.....

Well, after searching, I don't have a pic of the clutch.......

if your gonna use her as a work horse to pull trailers and such chain them turfs up and yes then fill the tires with water or some fluid....But to be a good competetive puller you need ags tires and your right, you will break it again prolly....If you broke it already....I hate to say it(im a SEARS MAN!!!) but a cub cadet is king in pulling.....id leave her alone and just wash her up, i myself like the old "rusty" look....it tells their story!!!

yeah....i got some brush pile i want to clear up behind the garage.....i tried pushing it, and got it about 3 ft but lost traction, so i gotta chain up and try again......got the chains sitting by my blower...

Well, here's the results of chaining up........rediculous traction..........enough to dig to the rim, then back out like it was nothing at all...........





Averaged another 4 ft back on the brush, and a few spots got it about 6-8ft back........I am quite happy with the performance of the chains......although I had to do a bit of landscaping with the plow afterwards...........

that pushed pretty good if you put ags on it, it would be a nice puller. i would just be carful of the tranny since you broke it once

ya i think ags would work great
